Amboseli and Tsavo West Elephant Safari

Overview

The Amboseli and Tsavo West Elephant Safari combines two of the most rewarding and visually distinct national parks in Kenya into a single five day journey that showcases the extraordinary diversity of the Kenyan wilderness. Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro is the finest destination in Africa for elephant photography and one of the most scientifically important elephant research sites in the world, home to the Amboseli Elephant Research Project founded by Cynthia Moss which has tracked elephant families continuously since 1972. The parks elephants are remarkably habituated to safari vehicles and move freely through the open swamps and grassland, allowing photographers to capture the classic African image of a tusker elephant with the glacial summit of Kilimanjaro rising 5,895 metres above sea level in the background. Tsavo West National Park presents a completely contrasting landscape of volcanic drama, ancient lava flows and the iconic Mzima Springs where an underground river from the Chyulu Hills emerges as a series of crystal clear pools. Hippos and crocodiles inhabit the springs and can be observed through an underwater viewing chamber while squadrons of hornbills and kingfishers patrol the banks above. Tsavo West shelters healthy populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, the distinctive red dust coated Tsavo elephants and all members of the Big Five.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Depart Nairobi in the early morning travelling south through the Rift Valley towards the Tanzanian border and the snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive to Amboseli takes approximately four hours with a midway refreshment stop. On arrival at Amboseli your guide will take you directly into the park for an afternoon game drive across the iconic Observation Hill where panoramic views across the swamps reveal elephant herds numbering in the hundreds moving through the reeds against the dramatic backdrop of Africas highest mountain.
Road transfer from Nairobi, Observation Hill panoramic views, afternoon elephant game drive, swamp circuit drive, sundowner at camp
Lunch and Dinner
Day 2
Full Day Amboseli Elephant Experience
A predawn start places you in Amboseli at first light as the mist lifts from the swamps and the summit of Kilimanjaro emerges in perfect clarity above the plains. Morning is the optimal time for elephant photography as the flat golden light and the movement of herds between the swamps and woodland creates extraordinary photographic opportunities. Your guide from the Amboseli Elephant Research Project database will identify individual elephants by name from their distinctive ear markings, bringing a remarkable personal dimension to every encounter. The afternoon drive explores the southern drier sections of the park where lion and cheetah hunt the open plains and zebra mingle with wildebeest in vast mixed herds.
Sunrise elephant photography session, swamp circuit full day game drive, elephant researcher guided encounter, afternoon predator tracking, lion and cheetah search
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 3
Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park
After a final morning game drive in Amboseli you will depart for Tsavo West, travelling through the Chyulu Hills corridor and entering the park via the Chyulu Gate. The afternoon game drive across the volcanic landscape introduces the very different character of Tsavo West, with its red dust plains, rocky outcrops and ancient lava flows contrasting dramatically with the open swamps of Amboseli. The Chyulu Hills on the park boundary support dense woodland where elephant and buffalo feed among the acacia trees.
Final Amboseli morning game drive, road transfer through Chyulu Hills, entry to Tsavo West via Chyulu Gate, afternoon game drive, volcanic landscape exploration

Day 4
Full Day Tsavo West with Mzima Springs
Today is dedicated to the wonders of Tsavo West including the legendary Mzima Springs, a series of crystal clear pools fed by underground water filtering through volcanic rock from the Chyulu Hills. The underwater viewing chamber at Mzima allows you to observe hippopotamus and Nile crocodile beneath the surface in their natural state, one of the most unusual and fascinating wildlife experiences in Kenya. The afternoon game drive covers the Kitani and Ngulia areas where lion and leopard sightings are frequent, and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary offers the possibility of a guided walk to encounter endangered black rhinos in a safely managed environment.
