Lake Baringo

A warm freshwater Rift Valley lake and a paradise for birdwatchers, recording over 450 bird species including Goliath heron, African fish eagle, Hemprichs hornbill and the rare Jackson widowbird.

About Lake Baringo

Lake Baringo is a large freshwater lake in the northern Rift Valley of Kenya and one of the most rewarding birding destinations in East Africa. Over 450 bird species have been recorded at the lake and its surrounds, making it an essential destination for serious birdwatchers. The lake is fed by several seasonal rivers and its freshwater habitat supports large populations of hippo, Nile crocodile and Monitor lizard. Boat trips on the lake provide unparalleled access to water birds at close range, including the African fish eagle, whose distinctive call is the iconic sound of the African wilderness.
The lake is an important habitat for birdlife and is considered one of the top bird watching destinations in Kenya. Hundreds of bird species have been recorded in the area, including kingfishers, herons, hornbills, and fish eagles. The presence of crocodiles and hippos adds to the richness of the ecosystem.
Lake Baringo also offers strong cultural experiences, as it is home to several communities including the Njemps people, who have a close relationship with the lake. Visitors can learn about local traditions, fishing practices, and ways of life that have remained largely unchanged over time.
Boat trips are a popular activity, allowing visitors to explore the lake and its islands while observing wildlife and birdlife. The peaceful atmosphere and relatively low visitor numbers make Lake Baringo an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet and authentic experience.
The surrounding region features hot springs, rocky outcrops, and scenic viewpoints that enhance the natural appeal of the area.
