Ngorongoro is famous around the globe as an echo of Eden. It is a 12-mile (19 km) wide volcanic crater, ringed with towering walls and sheltering forests, grasslands, fresh springs, a large lake, and a dazzling abundance of animals of all sorts. The sunken cone of the extinct volcano serves as a natural cradle for the wildlife, which remains in the vicinity year-round. Most of the activity is within the crater that is popular for bird watching, photography, walking safaris, and game viewing from a vehicle (4 wheel drive).

There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself, mostly Zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent

black-maned males. There are lots of colourful flamingos and a variety of other water birds around the soda lake on the crater floor.

More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater. Other game: leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts.

Lake Manyara National Park

Your first view as you approach Lake Manyara National Park is spectacular, regardless of direction. When you approach it from the east the Rift Valley escarpment looms on the horizon forming an impressive backdrop to the lake. If you come from the west and pause at the top of the escarpment, the Park lies in a green strip below you, the lake glistening in the sunlight.

You can easily pick out the mosaic of the Park’s different habitats. In the tall trees of the ground water forest monkeys leap from branch to branch, on the slope of the escarpment elephants stand in the shade of a baobab. In the acacia woodland lions lie draped along the branches of umbrella trees, in the pools along the lake shore the hippos wallow, and in the lake itself wade colorful flamingos.

The large variety of mammals, reptiles and birds in the Park and the different types of vegetation, all within a small area make Lake Manyara a diverse and particularly memorable place to visit.

As you approach the village of Mto wa Mbu (Mosquito Creek) from the direction of Arusha the outstanding landmark is the spectacular rift wall. Here where the Maasai plains give way to the cultivated uplands of Mbululand, lies Lake Manyara National Park, nestled at the base of the escarpment.

The Park derives its name from the Maasai word”manyara,” which is the name for the plant Euphorbia tirucalli . The Maasai use this plant to grow livestock stockades. Eventually manyara will produce a stockproof hedge which is more durable than any made of cut thorn branches. There is a specimen of Euphorbia tirucalli at the entrance gate.

The Great Rift Valley is part of a fault in the earth’s crust which stretches 8,000 kilometers (4,971 miles) from Turkey to the mouth of the Zambezi River in Mozambique . The fault is so massive that when astronauts landed on the moon the Rift Valley was clearly visible to them. In the Manyara area there is no eastern wall to the Rift Valley as there is in Kenya . Here the flattish country falls very gently into a depression, while in Kenya the valley has walls to both east and west.

The types of vegetation which occur in the Park are related to the geology of the area. The northern part of the Park, nearest the entrance, is composed mainly of volcanic rock which, being porous, allows many streams of clear water to flow out of the base of the rift wall. Further south, around Msasa River, the volcanic rock gives way to ancient crystalline rock, which is hard and non-porous allowing fewer springs and streams to emerge. Those that do – the Ndala, Bagayo and Endabash – cascade down the entire face of the wall when flowing.

Despite the fact Lake Manyara National Park is only 330 square kilometers (127 square miles) in area – of which about 230 square kilometers (89 square miles) are lake – it contains a large variety of habitats: the rift wall, the ground water forest, acacia woodland, areas of open grassland, the lake shore, swamp and the lake itself. Due to the variety of habitats the Park is able to support a large number of species. Over 380 species of birds, some migratory, have been recorded in the Park.

Lake Manyara National Park is an ideal size for a day trip. You can leave camp or the lodge early, picnic at one of the sites and then return towards evening. The Park roads are suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles, although some of the tracks are for dry season use only. (The long dry season is usually from June to September and the short one from January to February.) In order to get the most from your visit to Manyara, drive slowly, take some of the loop roads and spend time looking at the different types of trees and watching animals. It is recommended that you take a guide with you, because they know the roads well and where the wildlife is at any particular time. They can therefore plan an exciting game drive. Surprisingly enough, it is easy to drive past a tree full of sleeping lions unless you are trained through constant practice to spot them. There is only one entrance to the park, and so all trails start and end at the gate.

Mt Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania is the envy of wildlife departments across Africa. Custodian of the highest point in Africa, it generates an annual revenue of millions of dollars from some 18 000 visitors. It is also hailed as the Holy Grail of government-led conservation – a national park that provides such tangible benefits to its neighboring human communities that they work hard to ensure its success.

But is tourism safeguarding the conservation of this special environment? After a recent visit to climb the Uhuru peak, we suggest that although the people around Kilimanjaro are better off because of the mountain, the park and its visitors are amending the conservation ethic.

Kilimanjaro National Park takes in the area above the 8,850 feet, or 2,700 meters, on the mountain. It includes the moorland and highland zones, Shira Plateau, Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. In addition, the Park has six corridors or rights of way through the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. The Forest Reserve, which is also a Game Reserve, was established in 1921; the Park was established in 1973 and officially opened in 1977.

Kilimanjaro stands a scant 205 miles south of the equator, on the northern boundary of Tanzania. Its location on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean, and its great size and height strongly influence the climate, vegetation, animal life and the climbing conditions.-see Also Equatorial and Arctic Conditions.

It is made up of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), Mawenzi 16,896 feet (5,149 meters); and Shira 13,000 feet (3,962 meters).

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and scientific value. With more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson’s gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The wildebeest and zebra moreover form the star cast of a unique spectacular – the annual Serengeti migration.

The name ‘Serengeti’ comes from the Maasai language and appropriately means an ‘extended place’. The National Park, with an area of 12,950 square kilometres, is as big as Northern Ireland, but its ecosystem, which includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Maswa Game Reserve and the Maasai Mara Game reserve (in Kenya), is roughly the size of Kuwait. It lies between the shores of Lake Victoria in the west, Lake Eyasi in the south, and the Great Rift Valley to the east. As such, it offers the most complex and least disturbed ecosystem on earth.

A unique combination of diverse habitats enables it to support more than 30 species of large harbivores and nearly 500 species of birds. Its landscape, originally formed by volcanic activity, has been sculptured by the concerted action of wind, rain and sun. It now varies from open grass plains in the south, savannah with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly, wooded grassland in the north, to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. Small rivers, lakes and swamps are scattered throughout. In the south-east rise the great volcanic massifs and craters of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Each area has its own particular atmosphere and wildlife.

Travellers are not the only ones who now flock to see the animals and birds of the Serengeti. It has become an important centre of scientific research. In the late fifties, Dr. Bernhard Grizmek and his late son Michael did a pioneering work in aerial surveys of wildlife. It resulted in the best-selling classic Serengeti Shall Not Die and a number of films which made the Park a household name.

Most visitors enter the Park from the south-east, dropping down from the escarpment of the Ngorongoro Highlands onto the open short grass plains. The road passes by the Olduvai Gorge, where Dr. and Mrs. Leakey found the 1.75 million-year-old remains of Australopithecus boisei (‘Zinjanthropus’) and Homo habilis which suggest that our species first evolved in this area. To the west, the Gorge reaches Lake Ndutu where a safari lodge is attractively set amongst trees by the water’s edge.

In the open grass plains during the rainy months from November to May hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and Burchell’s zebra congregate. The area is the starting point for one of the great wonders of the world: the Serengeti annual migration. Towards the end of May when the grass becomes dry and exhausted, the wildebeest start to mass in huge armies. All is far from peaceful, for it is the rutting season and each male tries to establish a stamping ground. Eventually, after several dummy runs, the animals begin their trek in a column several miles long to the permanent waters in the north of the Park. After moving westwards, the migration divides by some uncanny instinct, one group turning north-east and the other due north. Once started, little stops the stampede: hundreds often drown at a time in the broad Mara river in the north.

Although outnumbered eight to one, the zebra join in the migration, maintaining their family units of about a dozen members, each with a dominant stallion. Their yelping bark combines with the bleating of the wildebeest to give the typical sound of the migration. Lion, cheetah, hyena and hunting dog follow the wildebeest and zebra, making sure that only the fittest survive. In November, when the grazing is finished in the North, this army of animals surges back to the now green pastures of the south, where they calve and mate before starting the entire cycle again. Normally, the best time to see the animals here is during January and February.

Heading north into the Park, the grass becomes noticeably longer, and it is usual to see Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, as well as the occassional small groups of topi and kongoni. Ostriches and secretary birds stalk the grass, while a family of warthog often scurry away. Out of the vast sea of grass also rise great granite outcrops, known as ‘kopjes’, which have their own range of vegetation and wildlife.

Sweetwaters Game Reserve is 24,000-acre private ranch with magnificent views across the plains to the snow capped peaks of Mount Kenya. This game sanctuary is the closest reserve to Nairobi (2.5 hours drive) home to all the big five game, and has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any park or reserve in Kenya. Its popular waterhole is floodlit by night, providing excellent and secluded rarely seen game viewing.

Game drives at Sweetwaters are indeed a pleasure. Game viewing may also take the form of game walks accompanied by our Resident Naturalist, and game rides on horseback. Camel riding, night game drives and “bush” lunches or dinners are a delight. The Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Information Centre, Morani the tame black rhino and the Visitor’s Information Centre are most informative and entertaining and should all be visited while in the Game Reserve.

Located on the reserve is one of several Jane Goodall Institute Sanctuaries maintained in East Africa. Kept here are a group of chimpanzees originally housed at the JGI sanctuary in Bujumbura, Burundi. When the Burundi government became unstable in 1994, the chimpanzees were relocated here.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

A 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary has been set up at Sweetwaters Game Reserve, a 15-minute drive from Sweetwaters Tented Camp. A visit to this Sanctuary and the 30-minute boat ride (subject to fine weather) on the river among the chimps is a must… The aim of the project, initiated by Lonrho East Africa, Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall Institute, was to set up a colony where chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions.

Priority is given to orphaned and abused chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 26 chimps, including two babies born in the Sanctuary. There is also a new Visitor’s Information Centre at Morani’s Boma, which is a must for all visiting clients staying both at Sweetwaters Tented Camp and Ol Pejeta House.

Attractions

CAROL
Carol is a tame warthog who lives in an enclosure near Morani with her three piglets.

MORANI AND THE VISITOR’S CENTRE
Morani rates special mention. Morani is a tame black rhino (a rare phenomenon) born in 1974. He was brought to the ranch after his mother was killed by poachers, and ever since is resident in his own sub-sanctuary 8 km away from Sweetwaters Tented Camp. A visit to Morani is an especially wonderful treat for children. At the entrance to Morani’s Boma is the new Visitor’s Centre which is aimed at teaching guests about the Game Reserve. A definite must!

CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY AND INFORMATION CENTRE
A 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary has been set up at Sweetwaters Game Reserve. A visit to this Sanctuary and the 30-minute boat ride (subject to fine weather) on the river among the chimps attracts no extra charge. The aim of the project, initiated by Lonrho East Africa, Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall Institute, is to set up a colony where chimps can be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions. Priority is given to orphaned and abused chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 24 chimps, including two babies born in the Sanctuary.

CAMEL RIDES
Seeing wildlife within the sanctuary, perched atop camels is a unique experience. Sweetwaters Tented Camp has three camels each carrying two people, and a guide always accompanies guests. The camel safari lasts for 1 hour, and can be taken at any time, subject to availability, from 0800 to 1700 hours.

DAY GAME DRIVES
On offer are 2-3 hours morning game drives, starting at 0630 hours or 2-3 hour afternoon game drives, starting at 1600 hours. Seat-in-car game drives are available (i.e., charges are made per person, rather than per vehicle). Sweetwaters Tented Camp has three available vehicles which can also be booked for exclusive use. Each vehicle capacity is 7 seats, with 5 window seats. Full-day game drives with a picnic lunch start at 0900 hours and finish off at 1600 hours, in which case the vehicles have to be booked for exclusive use.

NIGHT GAME DRIVES
This is a special drive as night game drives are not permitted in National Parks and Reserves in Kenya. Generally all sorts of nocturnal animals such as aardvark, porcupine, silver-backed hyena, and leopard can be seen. You can either go on the early drive (1900 – 2100 hours) or after dinner (2100 – 2200 hours). Seat-in-car night game drives are available (i.e., charges are made per person, rather than per vehicle). The vehicles can also be booked for exclusive use. The vehicles’ capacity is 6 seats.

WALKING SAFARIS
Accompanied by a naturalist/ armed guide, this is a very detailed exposure to the natural habitat, where vegetation, bird, insect and game species will be pointed out to you. Game walks are billed on an hourly basis. Children under the age of 12 years are not permitted to participate.

The Ereri multi-cultural Manyatta
Located one kilometre outside the Serat Gate on the north border of Sweetwaters Game Reserve, this Multi-cultural Manyatta (village) is the perfect introduction to the Tribes of Kenya. Watch demonstrations, traditional dancing, observe building techniques, buy jewellery and other souvenirs. You can also watch traditional cattle blood letting (prior arrangement needed) Open 10.00 – 12.00 daily.

Rhino patrols
Venture on foot into the Sweetwaters Game Reserve to find and monitor black rhinos. Experience the excitement of being in the bush with nothing but nature between you and these magnificent beasts. Join a rhino patrol with our experienced armed rangers to guide you.”

Wild dogs (LYCAON PICTUS) return to Sweetwaters after an absence of 30 years A pack of between 12-14 wild dog has recently been sighted on a number of occasions within the Sweetwaters Game Reserve in Laikipia. This pack currently appears to be moving between the neighbouring Ol Pejeta Ranch and the Sweetwaters game reserve, having originated from nothern Laikipia. This particular group is well known to the Laikipia Predator Project which is based on Mpala ranch to the north.

Wild dog are one of the rarest carnivores in Africa, having disappeared from large parts of their former ranges. Indeed, this species was all but eliminated from Laikipia 30 years ago, persecuted by pastoralists and farmers alike. Their return demonstrates how Laikipia has begun to emerge as one of Kenya’s foremost conservation areas. Laikipia now boasts a thriving wildlife tourism industry and a density of wildlife second only to the Mara area of southern Kenya.”

Tsavo West & Tsavo East

The twin national parks of Tsavo East and West together form one of Africa’s largest wilderness reserves. Taken as a whole, Tsavo contains 10 million acres of pure wilderness, incorporating savanna, ranges and hills, acacia and montane forest, and an extensive river system in an area larger than the island of Jamaica.

The vast plains of Tsavo are crossed by the main Nairobi-Mombasa railroad. This historic railway was, in 1899, the scene of one of Africa’s greatest adventure stories. Two large lions actively preyed on the railway workers as they built a bridge over the Tsavo River, claiming more than 120 victims. As they evaded hunters for month after month, for well over a year, the legend of the “Maneaters of Tsavo” was born.

The sheer scale of Tsavo gives the visitor a chance to really get away from it all and to explore the wild in total solitude. On safari, the visitor will typically see large herds of elephants, their hides turned a luminous red from the dust. Not far behind will be the lions, the buffaloes, the elands, the giraffes, the impalas, the gazelles, the antelopes, the kudus and even the rhinos. Tsavo is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with its numerous species of weavers, hornbills, sunbirds, rollers, and raptors.

One of Tsavo’s most interesting geographical features is the Lugard Falls, where whitewater rages through a series of spectacular rock formations. The volcanic Mzima Springs, which produce 50 million gallons of fresh water daily, should not be missed. The waters are alive with hippos and waterfowl. A unique underwater observatory has been constructed, yielding incredible views of this crystal clear underwater world, where massive hippos glide silently through swirling shoals of barbel. The springs have created a sprawling wetland paradise of giant raphia palms, an oasis alive with water birds.

The Aberdares is the established name of a mountain range which thrusts directly north from Nairobi for more than 160 kms. The range was named after then President of the Royal Geographical Society by the intrepid Scot, Joseph Thomson, who explored the region in 1883. The Kikuyu name Nyandarua is slowly gaining prominence.

The Aberdare National Park encompasses all land over 3200m together with a projection due east, known as the Salient, which reaches down to 2130m near Nyeri town. The park is a fairyland, awesome in its majesty and beauty. But crossing these mountains is an unpredictable event since rain is both frequent and heavy. The highest point of the range is Ol Doinyo Satima (the mountain of the young bull in Maa language of the Masai), which reaches 3998m. At an elevation of about 3350m along the Naivasha to Nyeri road, strange six metre tall mutants of alpine plants – groundsel, erica, hypericum, lobelia and sennecio – grow in profusion. Icy rivers plunge in glorious cascades and spectacular waterfalls.

The salient which thrusts a dense forest through rich farmland is where both Tree Tops and the Ark are situated. The salient’s origin lies in an elephant migration route between the two mountains, now sadly no longer. But the forest is rich in wildlife; elephant and rhino, warthog, bush pig and giant forest hog, waterbuck, duiker, suni, dikdik, bongo and reebuck are all to be seen. In the canopy the black and white colobus monkey performs its aerial acrobatics and Sykes’ monkey and black faced vervet can also be found.

The carnivores are represented by lion, usually more hairy and spotted than on the plains, leopard and serval, the latter often seen on the moorlands and sometimes in its melanistic state.

Birds are not only plentiful, but dazzling. The crowned eagle (which eats monkeys) is everywhere and the forest echoes to the shrill cries of the silvery-cheeked hornbill. The resplendent sunbirds are well represented, among them the brilliant metallic violet Tacazze, the emerald green Malachite Sunbird and on the moorlands the Scarlet tufted Malachite Sunbird, with its very long slender tail.

The number of visitors to Aberdare National Park is high, mainly due to the popularity of Tree Tops and The Ark. The park itself is still very much under-visited despite its grandeur and its powerful vistas.

Fauna & Flora:
Rich alpine and sub-alpine flora giving way at lower altitudes to bamboo forests and montane forests. Mammals of the forest zone include blue monkey, colobus, leopard, elephant, warthog black rhino, giant forest hog, bushbuck, buffalo, red duiker, and suni. The open moorlands have eland, several species of duiker, and the rare bongo. More than 200 bird species have been recorded.

The Amboseli is a place of wide dry plains, where boundless horizons are tucked into the corners of the sheltering sky. Amboseli is particularly renowned for its large herds of elephants, including some impressively tusked bulls that are drawn to the park’s lush swamplands.

But the even greater giant that rules over these plains is a mountain. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s largest mountain, lies just over the border in Tanzania, but the most impressive views of its snow – capped peak are to be found on the Amboseli side. The early light of dawn turns the mountain a dark hue of purple, shading the famous “Snows of Kilimanjaro” an ethereal pink. The sight of Kilimanjaro rising high above the herds of elephant crossing Amboseli’s plains is a classic African image.

Herds of wildebeest, zebra and impala also graze on the open plains. Amboseli’s acacia forests make for good birding, and they also serve as home to many small mammals. Cheetahs are another frequent visitor. The park is centered around a large hill, with fantastic views of the surrounding plains, and is often crossed by whirlwinds that send columns of dust into the sky.

The area surrounding the park is home to many Masai communities. The park covers approximately 155 square miles (400 square kilometers), with its southern boundary running along the Tanzanian border .
